Polk League of Women Voters is hosting a Hot Topic Discussion on Health Care in Polk County. Wednesday, October 18 from 3:30-5:30 PM.

The healthcare that citizens in Polk County receive is predicated on healthcare policy that is developed at the Federal, State and County level.  It is also based on local healthcare providers and the ability of citizens to purchase health insurance coverage.

The Policy:  Dr. Elaine Thompson, President and CEO of Lakeland Regional Health, is one of the foremost experts in Polk County on healthcare delivery and the impact of healthcare policy on the local care environment.  Dr. Thompson will speak about how healthcare policy impacts care on the macro level and for the patients and families her organization serves.

The Personal:  Pat Bass is a person that has benefited from the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  She has worked all of her life.  For a large part of her life she received healthcare coverage from her employer or that of her husband.  After her husband lost his employer based coverage, Pat was unable to purchase health insurance because the cost was prohibitive and she had preexisting health conditions.  She is too young for Medicare and still self-employed, working part-time.  She is the sole caregiver for three grandchildren and a special needs daughter.  Her husband is also somewhat disabled.  Pat will talk about what the ACA has meant to her and her family.
